Sam Hughes arrived in the afternoon of February 23, after only two and a half hours of labor. He is a massive 9 pounds 10 ounces and 21 inches long, which means he is kicking out the end of the hospital blankets that are designed for smaller people. Father Jason says he is as cute as babies get. He is doing well. Mother Laurie gets to rest up for a couple of days in the hospital, partly thanks to a blizzard that is predicted for February 24, and partly due to good insurance. Sam arrived so quickly that the epidural anesthetic did not have time to take full effect, so he was a bit more difficult than his brothers and sister, particularly since hs is so big.
Sam's brothers and sister came to visit him in the hospital. "You named him Sam!" said Alex, Sam's six year old brother who was excited about finding out his name. Jill, his nearly five year old sister, was fascinated with him and asked hundreds of questions while she insisted on looking at him all the time. Max, Sam's three year old brother, spent most of the visit sitting on Uncle Jeff's lap, then walked over to Sam and said "Baby".
Sam has chubby cheeks, and even chubby eyelids and temples. He is quiet, does not fuss much and eats well to support all that size. The pediatrician says he is healthy, as everything checks out. Mother Laurie describes him as "sweet", a good baby who is sleeping well between feedings.
Saturday February 24
It is snowing now in Colorado, but Sam will be home soon. Father Jason and Uncle Jeff better get some sleep before he gets there, as a baby and three young ones will take a lot of attention. Welcome to the world, Sam, from your Grandma and Grandpa, Tim and Judy Burrell.
Sunday February 25
Laurie and baby Sam came home from the hospital yesterday evening, to get there ahead of the snow storm in Colorado Springs. This is particularly lucky for Jason's parents, Grandpa Tom and Grandma Shari, so they can spend more time with Sam while they are there.
It is my grandson Max's birthday today, he is three. I think he likes his younger brother, Sam, because his favorite toys are minature trains from the Thomas the Tank Engine series. Max tried to give one of his favorite trains, Percy, to his brother Sam so he could enjoy it too. Laurie is trying to teach Max his brother Sam's name, he repeats it but they are not sure he has figured it out. Sister Jill is still asking lots of questions, and brother Alex is getting used to having even more siblings.
